Dr Sunil Shroff is a Urologist, Transplant Surgeon, and a Social Entrepreneur. The crusader for organ donation in India, Sunil, is the founder and managing trustee of MOHAN Foundation; a not-for-profit organisation that has been promoting organ donation and transplantation in India since 1997.

Wiki/Biography

Dr Sunil Shroff was born in 1953 (age 67 years; as in 2020), in Sahibganj, Bihar, and was raised in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He studied at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Gill Nagar, Chennai from 1965 to 1970. After that, he did an MBBS and an MS degree from Prince of Wales Medical College (now Patna Medical College) in 1982 and then went to the UK for further studies in 1983. There, he earned Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, UK, in 1986, followed by specialisation in Urology, Andrology and Kidney Transplantation from the Institute of Urology & Nephrology, London. After that, he did a post-graduation course in Urology from University College of London (UCL) and embarked on his career in the medical field.

Family

Sunil Shroff has two brothers, Arun Shroff and Sanjay Shroff, who are also medical practitioners.

Career

After concluding his formal education in the medical field, he worked at various superior positions in the UK; as a Lecturer, Registrar and Senior Registrar at St. Peter’s Hospital, Middlesex Hospital and the Royal London Hospital in London, before he returned to India in 1995. After returning to India, he headed the newly formed department of Urology & Renal Transplantation at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute (SRMC & RI) at Porur, Chennai from 1995 to 2015. While serving there, he trained 18 Urologists and 40 Allied Healthcare Specialist and numerous nurses over the years. In April 2015, he started working as the Senior Consultant Urologist & Transplant Surgeon at Madras Medical Mission Hospital.

MOHAN Foundation

Sunil Shroff conceived the MOHAN Foundation in 1996 and started its operations in August 1997. Through counselling and facilitating organ and tissue donation, Dr Shroff’s NGO has done a revolutionary work in India and has helped as many as 11,609 lives till 2020.  The initiative, which started from Chennai, has spread all over India and has its offices in Jaipur, Nagpur, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai as of 2020.

Work in Healthcare Information Technology

• He is the founder and chief editor of www.medindia.net, one of the leading healthcare websites in India working towards empowering consumers, doctors, and healthcare professionals globally with reliable, accurate, timely and personalized health information. All its services are free of cost.

• He formed the Indian Organ Transplant Registry (www.transplantindia.com) for the collection of data related to the transplant of organs from various centres in the country.

• He along with a bunch of other doctors formed the Medical Computer Society of India; a Unique Indian society that encourages the use of computers in Medical sciences for better patient care and to bring down the cost of treatment.

Facts/Trivia

• Sunil Shroff’s ancestors are from Rajasthan; however, he was born in Bihar and brought up in Tamil Nadu.

• Sunil Shroff has given up non-veg, black coffee, and gas-rich drinks to keep his body healthy.

• Owing to his NGO’s contributions, deceased organ and tissue donation rate rose exponentially in a country that had almost no donations taking place when MOHAN Foundation started back in 1997.
