Subodh Kumar Jaiswal was born on Saturday, 22 September 1962 (age 58 years; as of 2020) in Sindri, Dhanbad in Jharkhand. His zodiac sign is Virgo. He pursued his graduation in English at DAV College, Chandigarh, and later, he did an MBA at University Business School, Panjab University. Career

After clearing the UPSC exam, he was appointed as the Additional Superintendent of Police in Amravati, Maharashtra in 1986. He was appointed as the head of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the High Court in 2003 to investigate a multi-crore fake stamp paper scam conducted by Abdul Karim Telgi. The case was later handed over to the CBI. He was appointed as the head of the Anti-Terrorism squad to probe the Malegaon blast case in 2006.

 

He has also served in the Special Protection Group (SPG), Intelligence Bureau (IB), and the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW). In 2018, he was appointed as the Police Commissioner of Mumbai, and in 2019, he served as Maharashtra’s Director General of Police (DGP). In May 2021, after a series of meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, and the opposition leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury he was appointed as the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation. Initially, three names were shortlisted for the position including Kumar Rajesh Chandra (1985-Bihar cadre IPS), VSK Kaumudi (1986-Andhra Pradesh cadre), and Subodh Kumar Jaiswal. On Subodh’s appointment, Secretary ACC Srinivas R Katikithala said,

The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has based on the panel recommended by the committee, approved the appointment of Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, IPS (MH: 1985) as Director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for two years from the date of assumption of charge of the office or until further orders whichever is earlier.”

  • After being appointed as Maharashtra DGP in 2019, various disagreements had arisen between Uddhav Thackeray and Subodh. While addressing the media, Devendra Fadnavis, former chief minister of Maharashtra said,

Mr Jaiswal is a competent officer. But he was frustrated with how the State government has been functioning over the last few months. He was never taken into confidence. This has happened for the first time in the State.” [3]The Hindu

  • In 2009, he was awarded President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service.
  • He was heading the investigating team involved in The Elgaar Parishad and Bhima Koregaon case before it was transferred to the CBI in 2020.
