Gitanjali Song No 11 – Lyrics & Translation

Lyrics

Bhajan Pujan Sadhan Aradhana

Samasta thak pore.

Ruddhodware debalayer kone

Keno achhish ore.

Andhokare lukiye apon mone

Kahare tui pujish sangopone,

Nayan mele dekh dekhi tui cheye

Debota naai ghore.

Tini gechhen jethay mati bhenge

Korchhe chasha chaash.

Pathor bhenge katchhe jethay poth

Khatchhe baromaash.

Roudra jole achhen sobar sathe

Dhula tahaar legechhe dui haate

Taari moton suchi boson chhari

Aaye re tui dhulaay pore.

Mukti? Ore mukti kothay pabi,

Mukti kothay achhe

Aponi prabhu srishtibandhon pore

Bandhaa sabar kachhe.

Rakho re dhyan, thak re fuler daali,

Chhinruk bastra, laguk dhulabali,

Karmajoge taar sathe ek hoye

Gharma poruk jhore.

ধুলা তাঁহার লেগেছে দুই হাতে;

Translation

Hymns, prayers, worship, meditation-

Bid them good bye

Behind the door, at temple’s corner-

You’re seated why?

Alone, hiding murkily

Whom do you worship in secrecy?

Open your eyes and see-

God is not in the abbey.

Gone he is where the soil is plowed-

Where farmers grow-

To pave the roads, rocks are shattered-

The labors all year through.

In sun and rain, with all he stands-

With dust is smeared, both his hands.

Like him forsake your clothes-fancy.

And on dust welcome hey.

Salvation? Hey, where you’ll find,

Where is salvation?

The lord has twined-

With all he has a union.

Leave meditation, leave the flower tray.

Let clothes be torn, let it be gray.

Unite with him in his action

Let the sweat spray.

Gitanjali Song No 11

LEAVE THIS chanting and singing and telling of beads!

Whom dost thou worship in this lonely dark corner of a temple with doors all shut? Open thine eyes and see thy God is not before thee!

He is there where the tiller is tilling the hard ground

and where the path-maker is breaking stones.

He is with them in sun and in shower,

and his garment is covered with dust.

Put off thy holy mantle

and even like him come down on the dusty soil!

Deliverance? Where is this deliverance to be found?

Our master himself has joyfully taken upon him the bonds of creation;

he is bound with us all for ever.

Come out of thy meditations and leave aside thy flowers and incense!

What harm is there if thy clothes become tattered and stained?

Meet him and stand by him in toil and in sweat of thy brow.
