Celina Gounder is an American infectious diseases specialist, filmmaker, medical journalist, epidemiologist, and internal medicine physician.  At present, in 2020, she’s been working at the New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine and has global experience related to HIV epidemics. Dr. Gounder is also elected as the third Indian American member of president Biden’s COVID-19 task force.

Gounder was born in America in 1977 to a French mother from Normandy and a Tamil Indian father hailing from a small village Erode in Tamil Nadu. Her father moved to the states in the late 1960s and worked as an aerospace engineer at the Boeing Company. Celine Gounder graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in molecular biology from Princeton University and later completed her master of science from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2000. She studied tuberculosis (TB) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus/​Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) in various countries including South Africa, Lesotho, Ethiopia, and Brazil between 1998 and 2012. In 2004, she received her Doctorate degree in medicine from the University of Washington School of Medicine. While pursuing her doctorate she co-founded the International Health Group with Vivek Murthy (Karnataka origin nineteenth Surgeon General of the United States) that basically helps the doctors in training to establish their careers while helping people around the world. She worked as an intern in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Her first post was as a postdoctoral researcher at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where she researched about Tuberculosis (TB) and HIV in sub-Saharan Africa. She also worked as Director of delivery in a consortium to tackle AIDS and TB, which was funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Later, she also joined the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and worked on controlling tuberculosis in the city. She also worked as a medical journalist on the editorial board of TEDMED, to address public health issues. One of the biggest achievements of her career came on November 9, 2020, when she was named as a member of the COVID-19 Advisory Board of the U.S. president Joe Biden.
