Akash Singh is a young Indian cricketer hailing from Rajasthan. He was a member of the Indian U-19 cricket team that lost to Bangladesh in the final of the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup 2020. The left-arm medium-fast bowler is known for his deadly in-swingers.
Akash Singh was born on Friday, 26 April 2002 (age 18 years; as of 2020), in Nagla Ram Ratan Village, located in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan. His full name is Akash Maharaj Singh. He started playing cricket professionally in 2012 after getting enrolled at Shardul Sports School in Bikaner. In 2014, he moved to Bikaner to receive cricket coaching from Vivek Yadav, a coach at the Aravali Cricket Club.
He used to spend the majority of his time playing cricket. His passion for the sport was so high that he could not strike a balance between cricket and academics and consequently failed in class 10 board exams four times. Akash has two sisters and an elder brother named Lakhan, who has played cricket till district level. Lakhan often used to take Akash along with him for his cricket matches and was the one who exposed Akash to the sport.
Akash first came into the limelight at the age of 15 in November 2017, after he ran through an entire opponent team by taking all the 10 wickets in four overs in an open T20 match held in Jaipur. The most remarkable part of the performance was that he did not concede a single run in his bowling.
One of the prominent feats in his career came in December 2019 when he was named in the Indian squad for the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup 2020. He ended the tournament with seven wickets in six matches at a miserly economy of 3.81, with remarkable performances against Bangladesh, Kuwait, and Australia (3/30 in the quarterfinal).
Considering his previous performances, the Rajasthan Royals bought him at his base price of Rs. 20 lakh in the players’ auctions ahead of the IPL 2020. However, the speedster did not get to play any matches in the tournament.
Moments after India lost the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup 2020 in the final to Bangladesh, a few players from both the teams got involved in an ugly scuffle on the field. Akash Singh, along with Ravi Bishnoi and three other Bangladeshi players, was found guilty for the brawl. He was charged with violating Article 2.21 of the ICC code of conduct. Consequently, he was levied with a sanction of eight suspension points, which are equal to six demerit points. The demerit points remained for the next two years.
