At the age of four, his family migrated to Hackney, London, where he spent his childhood. In the bustling multicultural district Hackney, he witnessed seemingly harmless events escalating to dangerous levels. In an interview, he said,

I was too scared to go to those parts of London when I was growing up!… Especially back then – you knew south London wasn’t the place to be. I just didn’t wanna go there. Same with Hackney. Not for me.”

He relocated to Romford during his teenage days, where he did his schooling at Chadwell Heath Academy. In school, he was intrigued by the world of acting when he played the role of Macduff, the main antagonist in William Shakespeare’s tragedy ‘Macbeth.’ In an interview, he said,

The thing that made me want to be an actor was Macbeth…We did a modern version at school and I was playing Macduff. It just really sparked something in me: I loved it!”

By the age of sixteen, he had starred in various theatrical productions by Stage Aurora Theatre Company. Career

At the age of 16, he worked as a delivery boy at his auntie’s Caribbean restaurant in Chadwell Heath, east London. Before venturing into the entertainment industry, Ward worked in a bookie shop, a shop away from racecourse where one can legally place bets in person with a licensed bookmaker. In college, one of his teachers took a shine to him and when she left her job to work for an acting agency, she signed Ward up, which led him to book small roles in music videos. At the age of seventeen when he won a modelling contest which led him to be the face of the e-commerce site JD Sports, where he modelled for sportswear.

Gigantic billboard in Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip featuring Ward led to him being internationally in demand. In 2018, he was one of the featured models in the SOS symposium conference materials. Later, the former JD model became the face of Louis Vuitton’s AW20 campaign.

In 2019, he came into the limelight when he played the role of Marco in the British crime drama film ‘Blue Story.’ The film is based around the estates of London, looking at the effects that the drug gangs have on the lives of teens growing up there. In the film, two best friends  Marco and Timmy are dragged into a gang rivalry between their areas, eventually plunging them into a life of crime.

In 2020, he appeared in the British anthology film series ‘Small Axe,’ which consists of five films that tell distinct stories about the lives of West Indian immigrants in London from the 1960s to the 1980s. Ward played the role of Franklyn Cooper in the episode titled “Lovers Rock.” The episode exhibits the story of two lovers Franklyn and Martha who meet at a reggae house party in 1980 in West London. Ward earned the nomination for BAFTA TV Award (2021) for playing the role of Franklyn.

In 2018, he made his digital debut with the British teen thriller series ‘The A List’ in which he played the role of Brendan. The series centres around Mia, a popular girl who arrives at the same summer camp in Peregrine Island expecting to be the queen bee until she meets Amber, a mysterious figure who instantly becomes the centre of attention. In the series, Brendan teams up with Mia to investigate the secrets of Peregrine Island.

He struck stardom in 2019 when played the protagonist Jamie in the third season of the 2011 British television crime drama ‘Top Boy,’ in the series, Jamie is an east London boy climbing the rungs of a Hackney drug-dealing gang while simultaneously looking after his two young brothers. Ward was nominated in the category of Actor (Male) at the RTS Programme Awards (2020) for playing the role of Jamie.

  • Ward grew up watching the first two seasons of the series ‘Top Boy.’ In 2013, when he was still at school and the second series of Top Boy was about to start, then on Channel 4, he tweeted: “Can’t wait for Top Boy, gna be sick :D.” In 2014, he texted the ‘Top Boy’ star Ashley Walters pleading for a chance to audition in the show, but never received a response. Being cast in ‘Top Boy’ was something he wanted to be a part of before he’d even realized what it meant to be an actor.
